Forty-Fourth Terrorist Plot Against the U.S. Marks Need for Continued Vigilance

By
January 9, 2012
On Saturday night, 25-year-old Sami Osmakac was arrested in connection to an alleged Islamist-inspired terrorist plot in Tampa, Florida. Osmakac, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in the former Yugoslavia, is believed to have planned to use vehicle bombs, assault rifles, grenades, and other explosives in an attack on possible targets including night clubs, businesses, and a local sheriff’s office.

His arrest was the result of an undercover operation in which the FBI had been monitoring Osmakac for months. Osmakac’s arrest marks the 44th terrorist plot foiled against the U.S. since 9/11 and serves as a strong reminder that the global war against terrorists is not yet won.

The Osmakac Plot

According to a complaint affidavit, the FBI was alerted to the plans of Sami Osmakac in September 2011 when an unnamed source became concerned following a request by Osmakac to purchase al-Qaeda flags. Shortly thereafter, Osmakac discussed his plans for violent attack with the information and outlined his potential targets. When Osmakac asked for help in obtaining firearms and other weapons, the informant then introduced him to an undercover FBI agent from whom Osmakac attempted to purchase an AK-47-style machine gun, Uzi submachine guns, high-capacity magazines, grenades, and an explosive belt.

In a later meeting with the FBI agent, Osmakac indicated that he wished to carry out a multi-pronged assault, beginning with vehicle explosive attacks and then employing an explosive belt to “get in somewhere where there’s a lot of people” and take hostages. On Saturday, Osmakac was arrested following a joint investigation conducted by the FBI Tampa Division and the Tampa Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Forty-Fourth Terror Plot

Osmakac’s arrest marks at least the 44th terrorist plot foiled against the U.S. since 9/11. Like this most recent plot, the vast majority of the attempted attacks against the U.S. have been foiled through the swift, concerted effort of the law enforcement and intelligence communities.

Increasingly, a number of attempted terrorist plots have been undertaken by individual or small-group actors with few or no direct ties to transnational terrorist organizations, such as al-Qaeda. Yet what this week’s thwarted attack once again shows is that “lone wolf” operations can be stopped when law enforcement is given the intelligence and investigatory tools they need.

The Osmakac plot should serve as another reminder that the war against terrorists is not yet won. While Osmakac was stopped long before the American public was put in harm’s way, terrorists continue to seek to harm the U.S. and injure and kill its people.

Thwarting the Next Attempted Attack

The threat of terrorist attack remains real, and the U.S. should continue its vigilance. Yet key holes within the U.S. counterterrorism enterprise remain unfilled. In order to thwart the next attempted attack, Congress and the Administration should:

  • Ensure that vital counterterrorism tools are maintained. Of the 44 attempted terrorist plots foiled since 9/11, only three were not stopped in the early stages of preparation. While these three plots may have appeared too close for comfort, the vast majority of plots have been foiled early on through the actions of law enforcement and intelligence. Key investigative tools such as the PATRIOT Act, having helped to thwart numerous attempted attacks in the past, remain vital in ensuring that law enforcement and intelligence authorities have the essential counterterrorism tools they need. In order to ensure that such vital counterterrorism tools are maintained, Congress should seek to make the three sunsetting provisions of the PATRIOT Act permanent.
  • Examine information-sharing gaps. Efforts to increase information sharing between the U.S. and its allies while improving interagency communications among the Departments of State, Justice, and Homeland Security and intelligence agencies are vital to protecting the U.S. from the continued threat of terrorism. Increased efforts at information sharing would amplify efficiency and timeliness in the counterterrorism field. Yet all too often, information sharing does not make for truly crosscutting communication but rather simply entails state and local law enforcement sending information up to the federal government. This gap in information sharing should not be allowed to continue.
  • Clarify the role of state and local law enforcement. An increasing number of the attempted terrorist plots against the U.S. have been undertaken by individual or small group “lone wolf” actors. With this changing profile of terrorist threats, adaptive approaches to counterterrorism—including fostering a greater role for state and local governments—are essential. State and local law enforcement know their communities best and are most likely to notice when something is not quite right. While the threat of Osmakac’s plot was first raised by a concerned citizen, the American public should not be the first line of defense. State and local law enforcement can extensively aid federal law enforcement and intelligence in thwarting future attempted attacks.

The Continued Threat

Unfortunately, this week’s thwarted attack will not be the last terrorist plot attempted against the U.S. Ensuring that the next attempted attack is stopped early on requires that the U.S. be committed to maintaining a strong and enduring counterterrorism enterprise.

Here is the gospel (from the website of the First Baptist Church of Naples,FL):

Real Facts of Life

Would you like to hear some good news?

Suppose you were standing in front of God and He asked you about your personal relationship with Him with this question:

“Why should I let you in my heaven?”

What would you say?

Fact 1: God has a purpose for you
He loves you very much. He made you and wants to have a wonderful relationship with you. He wants to give you a meaningful life here and eternal life in Heaven. “The gift of God is eternal life.” according to the bible (Romans 6:23). God has offered this free gift,
but it is usually unclaimed.

Fact 2: Your Problem
Some give no thought to God or eternity. Others try to get to God through religion by doing religious things to gain God’s favor. Tragically, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.” (Proverbs 14:12) But how much is enough? Actually, all fall short of God’s perfect standard. “For all have sinned” (Romans 3:23). The penalty for sin is separation from God forever in a place of unbelievable horror called Hell. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Fact 3: Jesus Christ’s Rescue
Jesus is God who became a man, living the perfect life you could never live. He did what you could not ‘d-o’, therefore Christianity is spelled ‘d-o-n-e.’ “But God demonstrated his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

Does this make sense to you?
Are you willing to turn from your sin and receive Jesus right now? This prayer can express your heart’s desire:

Dear Lord Jesus … I realize that I can’t rescue myself…
I believe that you died for me to pay
the penalty for my sins…I want to turn from my sins…
I accept Your forgiveness, Your new life,
and Your home in Heaven. Thank You, Lord.
Help me to live for You… In Your name I pray. Amen

Turning to Jesus involves receiving.
His gift of forgiveness for sins,  Eternal Life and a new life by believing He died for you. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

Faith is not just believing facts, but also acting on them.

Dr. Hayes Wicker is the pastor  and here is a portion of an interview with him:

An Interview with Hayes Wicker

Dr. Hayes Wicker, has been in ministry for over 41 years and has served as senior pastor at First Baptist Church, Naples, Florida since 1992.  He earned a B.A degree from Grand Canyon University and the M.Div. and D.Min. degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has served as President of the Florida Baptist Convention.
SBC Today: What are your two or three favorite TV shows? Movies?

Hayes Wicker: I prefer to watch football and basketball on TV, as well as the History Channel, and FOX News. I have always loved good Western movies and films that have an inspirational theme such as “Amazing Grace,” “Chariots of Fire,” and most recently, “War Horse.” Anything that is set in historical context I find interesting. I must confess a long attraction to action-adventure films like “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

SBC Today: Who are two or three of your “heroes in ministry?”

Hayes Wicker: Dr. T. W. Hunt has been my great model of a godly prayer warrior who faithfully intercedes for us daily. Dr. Roy Fish taught and modeled empowered evangelism and has greatly encouraged me. Dr. Adrian Rogers represented the total balance on a 10-talent pastor/leader/preacher. I have benefited greatly from the wise counsel, compassionate shepherding, and ministry-modeling of Dr. Jimmy Draper and Dr. Jim Henry. Dr. Ron Dunn modeled creative, expository preaching in a unique way for me in my early years. Dr. Paige Patterson has exemplified courageous conviction and believed in me even in tough times.

I have heard Richard Lee the pastor of First Redeemer speak several times and he is excellent. Below is an article that discusses Rick Santorum’s recent visit there.

Santorum questions Obama’s ‘world view,’ not faith

CUMMING, Ga. — Rick Santorum on Sunday condemned what he called President Barack Obama’s world view that “elevates the Earth above man,” discouraging increased use of natural resources.

The GOP presidential candidate also slammed Obama’s health care overhaul for requiring insurers to pay for prenatal tests that, Santorum said, will encourage more abortions.

A day after telling an Ohio audience that Obama’s agenda is based on “some phony theology, not a theology based on the Bible,” Santorum said he wasn’t criticizing the president’s Christianity.

“I’ve repeatedly said I don’t question the president’s faith. I’ve repeatedly said that I believe the president’s Christian,” Santorum told CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

“I am talking about his world view, and the way he approaches problems in this country. I think they’re different than how most people do in America,” he said in the broadcast interview.

The former Pennsylvania senator said Obama’s environmental policies promote ideas of “radical environmentalists,” who, Santorum argues, oppose greater use of the country’s natural resources because they believe “man is here to serve the Earth.” He said that was the reference he was making Saturday in his Ohio campaign appearance when he denounced a “phony theology.”

When pressed by reporters after he made the initial remark, however, Santorum made no mention of the president’s environmental policies. Instead, he suggested that Obama practices one of the “different stripes of Christianity.”

Santorum walked back those comments on CBS Sunday morning.

But later in the day, he again criticized Obama’s “theology” — with no reference to his environmental policies — while speaking to more than 2,000 supporters gathered at a suburban Atlanta megachurch.

The president is “trampling on a constitutional right,” Santorum said of the Obama administration’s recent decision to allow employees of religious schools and hospitals to have birth control covered by their insurance policies.

“It is imposing his ideology on a group of people expressing their theology, their moral code,” Santorum told those gathered in the First Redeemer Church, a megachurch that hosted former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee four years ago.

Obama’s campaign said Santorum’s initial remarks were another attack on the president’s faith by Republican rivals in a nominating contest that has grown increasingly bitter and negative.

“It’s just time to get rid of this mindset in our politics that, if we disagree, we have to question character and faith,” said Robert Gibbs, Obama’s former press secretary, on ABC’s “This Week.”

“Those days have long passed in our politics. Our problems and our challenges are far too great,” Gibbs said.

Santorum said his claim that Obama’s health care overhaul encourages abortions stems from the requirement for insurance companies to pay for prenatal testing, which he said will result in more pregnant women having more procedures. He specified amniocentesis, a procedure that can identify physical problems in the unborn.

“The bottom line is a lot of prenatal tests are done to identify deformities in utero and the customary procedure is to encourage abortion,” he said.

A doctor recommended abortion when a sonogram discovered health problems for Santorum’s youngest daughter, who was born three years ago with a genetic condition known as Trisomy 18, which typically proves fatal. She has lived longer than most children born with the condition.

“This is typical,” Santorum said. “This is what goes on in medical rooms around the country.”

He said he’s critical of the mandate in Obama’s health care plan that insurers must pay for the tests, not of prenatal testing in general.

“There are all sorts of prenatal testing which should be provided free. I have no problem with that if the insurance companies want to. I’m not for any of these things to be forced,” Santorum said.

Who will get 4th place in SEC basketball race?

SEC Basketball race for 4th places heats up Does anyone want 4th place? It seems that everytime a team gets a few wins under their belt and it appears they are going to sew up 4th place then they lose.

Look at Tennessee. The Vols played against a Bama team that had their two leading scorers out on suspension and they still beat the Vols. The Arkansas Razorbacks were rolling and then they lost their last two games. The Vols spanked the Hogs and after starting 17-0 at Bud Walton, the Hogs lost by 30 points to Florida at Bud Walton.

I really believe that Vandy is ready to make a leap into the top part of the SEC. However, there are ghosts of the past that they have to deal with. When General Neyland came to coach at Tennessee, all he was asked to do was win the Vandy series. Evidently Vandy had been schooling the Vols in more than one way back then.

Can Vandy get over the hump against teams like the Vols who have beat them almost every year for eternity? Last year Vandy could have won 9 or 10 games but they had so many hard luck stories. Just think about their games against Arkansas and Tennessee. Those should have been Vandy victories but the ghosts of the past came back to haunt them. Basically the “ghosts of the past” are just the mental aspect of the game that teams like Vandy need to conquer. Will it happen? I just don’t know, but I sure like Vandy’s coach and their quarterback.

Keith Green – So You Wanna Go Back To Egypt

Grumbling and Complaining —So You Wanna Go Back To Egypt?

By Keith Green

#2 Complaints Of Jealousy

Numbers reveals another dangerous complaint that’s buried in each one of us like a ticking bomb.

In Numbers 12:1 it says, “Then Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had married…” On the surface, their complaint seemed to be about Moses choosing a non-Jewish wife. But we know Moses was a praying man with a face-to-face relationship with God – and apparently God gave Moses the go-ahead to marry her. Actually, Miriam and Aaron were judging Moses and once they began to gripe, their real complaint came out. In the very next verse they said, “Has the Lord spoken only through Moses? Has He not spoken through us as well?”

You don’t have to dig too deep to see the sin of jealousy. God had elevated Moses to a place of leadership, honor, and respect. And his own brother and sister couldn’t stand it! Their complaint didn’t come from physical appetite, like the people demanding meat. They complained because of hungry egos!

Unfortunately, egos didn’t become extinct at the close of the Old Testament. New Testament Christians like us, have New Testament ego problems. By that I mean we sometimes get jealous and complain against our brothers and sisters in the Lord. I’ve seen this kind of jealousy between close friends who get involved in ministry at the same time. One of them is put in a leadership position and you’d expect the other one to be happy for him because Paul says, “Rejoice with those who rejoice.” (Rom.12:15)

But all too often the response is a bruised ego. Then the grumbling starts. “Why does he get to lead the Bible study? I’ve been a Christian longer than he has. I led him to the Lord! Last night he took five minutes to find Haggai!”

Sadly, one reason we get jealous of Christian preachers, teachers, or performers is because we see others idolizing them. We should be offended, but if some of us get honest, we’ll admit we want that kind of respect and admiration too. Maybe you’ve never seen it in this way, but sometimes we want to be idolized!

Jesus had to settle this problem among his 12 closest friends the night before He was crucified. He’d already told them He was about to die, and they were grieving, right? Wrong. The week before they had watched Him hailed as King when He entered Jerusalem and now they were arguing over who would be the greatest in His Kingdom! (Lk. 22:24) I would’ve gone out and looked for 12 new disciples! But Jesus took a towel and a basin of water, and washed their feet one by one, like a common household servant. Then He said, “Do you know what I have done to you? You call me teacher and Lord; and you are right; for so I am. If I then… washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.” (Jn. 13:12-14)

Are you complaining because no one recognizes your gifts? Are you picking at the flaws in leaders? Are you murmuring because someone besides you is getting attention and praise?

Paul warned one group of Christians: “But if you bite and devour one another, take care lest you be consumed by one another.” (Gal. 5:15) Jealous complaining is like a destructive cancer.

God allowed Miriam and Aaron to feel the cancerous effect of their complaints against Moses. In anger, the Lord struck Miriam with leprosy – the cancer of that age. (Num. 12:10) Though He cleansed her of the leprosy, she and Aaron were later forbidden to enter the Promised Land “because of rebellion.” (Num. 20:24)

The message is clear. Sometimes our complaints come from hungry egos we haven’t surrendered to the Lord. If you’ve been complaining because no one’s recognizing your gifts, surrender your ego to God before it becomes like a cancer, devouring your brothers and sisters in Christ, and consuming your own Spirit.

Your complete surrender will allow God to cleanse you. Then you will be ready to take your position in His Kingdom.

MESSAGE INTRODUCTION
Apologetics is positive and negative. It sets forth the reasons for belief, and it tears down the opposing arguments. But if you can’t argue anyone into the kingdom, why do it in the first place? Let’s find out from Dr. Sproul.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. To understand the offensive and defensive sides of apologetics.
2. To understand the difference between proof and persuasion.
3. To learn to appreciate and rely on the Scriptures and the rich tradition of apologetics as we confront the challenges of today.

QUOTATION AND THOUGHTS
Obstreperous (adj.): noisily resisting control or defying commands [from Latin, obstreperous, noisy]
St. Thomas Aquinas (1225—1274): Scholastic philosopher and theologian, born in Roccasecca, Italy. Most significant pre-Trent Catholic scholar other than Augustine. Three years after his death, a number of his views were condemned by Catholic authorities in Paris and Oxford, but in 1323, he was canonized by Pope John XXII, and in 1879, Pope Leo XIII issued an encyclical commending all his works to Catholic scholars.

LECTURE OUTLINE
I. Apologetics: Positive and Negative
a) We must state our position, positively affirming what the Christian church believes, if we are challenged. This can require much patience. b. We should also correct or tear down the false assumptions and irrationality present in other systems.

II. Where does apologetics start?

a) Some, like R.C., argue that apologetics starts with the existence of God.
Others say that you start with Scripture, or with history.
b) All apologetics systems that have any merit must affirm the depravity of man and the necessity of the Holy Spirit’s work in conversion.

III. Why do apologetics?

a) To obey the Scriptures—see 1 Peter 3:15.
b) To shame obstreperous non-Christians, as John Calvin stated.
c) “The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”
d) Christians should not surrender rationality and scientific inquiry to the secular world. The commonsense tools of learning can be used to corroborate the truth claims of Christianity.

IV. Proof and Persuasion

a) Proof can be offered, even irrefutable proof, but it does not necessarily lead to a change in belief.

Lionel Messi hat trick makes commentator shriek like he’s been tased

Lionel Messi momentarily overtook Cristiano Ronaldo as the top scorer in La Liga this season with a hat trick against Malaga on Sunday. Each of his goals was tremendous (the first was a header from considerable distance for someone who has been accused of not being able to use his head), but his third — Barcelona‘s final goal in the 4-1 win — was one of his trademark sublime runs topped off by a delicate finish while skipping over a challenge.

For former Newcastle/Ft. Lauderdale midfielder and current eccentric television commentator/professional Barcelona admirer Ray Hudson, this was all too much. So the only description he could offer of the goal was a gutteral yell you might expect to hear from someone with about a million volts coursing through their body. And, in its own way, it was perfect.

Once he calmed down a bit and changed his pants, Hudson sang Messi’s praises in his typically nonsensical way — something about Dr. Spock being “out of his Vulcan mind.” Then he hilariously topped it off by saying Messi was “running like he’s got a food mixer down his shorts.”

4 reasons why big government does not work

Four Reasons Why Big Government Is Bad Government

Posted by Daniel J. Mitchell

A new video from the Center for Freedom and Prosperity gives four reasons why big government is bad fiscal policy.

I particularly like the explanation of how government spending undermines growth by diverting labor and capital from the productive sector of the economy.

Some cynics, though, say that it is futile to make arguments for good policy. They claim that politicians make bad fiscal decisions because of short-term considerations such as vote buying and raising campaign cash and that they don’t care about the consequences. There’s a lot of truth to this “public choice” analysis, but I don’t think it explains everything. Maybe I’m an optimist, but I think we would have better fiscal policy if more lawmakers, journalists, academics, and others grasped the common-sense arguments presented in this video.

Four Reasons Why Big Government Is Bad Government

This Economics 101 video from the Center for Freedom and Prosperity explains that excessive government spending undermines prosperity by diverting resources from the productive sector of the economy. Moreover, the two main ways of financing government — taxes and borrowing — cause additional economic damage. www.freedomandprosperity.org

And even if the cynics are right, we are more likely to have good policy if the American people more fully understand the damaging impact of excessive government. This is because politicians almost always will do what is necessary to stay in office. So if they think the American people are upset about wasteful spending and paying close attention, the politicians will be less likely to upset voters by funneling money to special interests.

For those who want additional information on the economics of government spending, this video looks at the theoretical case for small government and this video examines the empirical evidence against big government. And this video explains that America’s fiscal problem is too much spending rather than too much debt (in other words, deficits are merely a symptom of an underlying problem of excessive spending).

Last but not least, this video reviews the theory and evidence for the “Rahn Curve,” which is the notion that there is a growth-maximizing level of government outlays.

2012 complete football schedule for SEC schools (Part 1)

BOOT CAMP: The Hogs will play LSU for The Boot here next fall.

I was very happy with Arkansas’ schedule versus other SEC schools.  The obvious advantage is that Arkansas has Alabama and LSU coming to Fayetteville to play while Alabama has to go to both LSU and Arkansas.

The disadvantage that teams in the west have is simple. They may be a top 5 team in the nation (like Arkansas was last year) and still lose two games during the year.

However, it is my view that the teams in the SEC East have a chance to go through the year with only one lost. The Vols have both Alabama and Florida at home and they avoided playing Arkansas in 2012 when the new SEC Schedule was drawn up.
